April & Jake’s Wedding

My name is Nicholas Hill and I love working as a Kent based wedding photographer. There is something special about Old Kent Barn Photography. It was with great excitement that I was asked to cover the wedding of the beautiful April and Jake. April had been long admired my wedding photography was thrilled when I was available for her wedding day.

Getting Ready

Wedding Details

Old Kent Barn Photography begins with me arriving early in order to capture the beautiful wedding details. It is so important to photograph everything as these are the images April and Jake will look back on years to come to remind them of how beautiful their wedding day really was.

I was able to take the bouquet outside to utilise the natural light, unfortunately the rain started so the dress and shoes were photographed in the bridal suite.

Bridal Preparation

The Bride

April was staying at the Marquis of Alkham, a gastro pub with beautiful suites upstairs. The Old Kent Barn Photography is about 15 mins away by car.

When I arrived with April she was just sitting down to start with the hair stylist. By arriving 2 hours before the bride departs for the ceremony I am able to take my time ensuring that I can tell the full story of the morning.

Once I had photographed the details I spent time with the bridesmaids as they busied themselves with their own hair and makeup. April had employed the services of her stylist to help professional get her into the dress and add the finishing touches.

When the Father of the Bride arrived to see his daughter April was looking simply stunning. She really was a stunning looking bride!

Groom Preparation

The Groom

Jake arrived at the Old Kent Barn Photography early in the morning and was met by my 2nd photographer Matthew. Jake documented the boys getting ready and then spent the morning helping to get the final touches setup for the ceremony.

The Ceremony

Old Kent Barn Photography benefits from the ability to utilise the high ceilings. April and Jake had decided to light the ceremony by candle. Unfortunately this would not prove enough light for a camera to do their ceremony justice.

Before bridal prep I travelled to the Old Kent Barn in order to set up my lighting for the ceremony. I knew we would need to utilise the extra lighting in order to capture the day properly.

April arrived in good time and as she walked down the aisle Jake was truly emotional and I think taken by how great April looked in her wedding dress.

Myself and Mathew were able to capture the wedding from two perspectives. I covered the stage whilst Matthew photographed the ceremony from the back of the room.

The Reception

The Reception at Old Kent Barn Photography really benefited from the sun coming out. Before the ceremony the weather was terrible and as we all emerged the sun was waiting for us.

I like to let the bride and groom have enough time to mingle with their guests before beginning the formalities of the reception where we get the formals and portraits done before wedding breakfast begins.

When the wedding reception is outside Matthew is able to move around freely capturing the guests as they drink and chat amongst themselves. Often we are able to do this without the guests being aware we are doing so.

The Formals

April and Jake had quite a large list of required formals. I do find these can take a while to complete os I always come prepared with additional copies. I had arrange with Jake to use two of his best men to gather up the required members the wedding for me. I was able to concentrate on the photography.

Before the wedding breakfast we even managed to fit in a large group shot of all the wedding guests. I positioned all the guests out the front of the main house and from an upstairs window was able to get the picture.

The Portraits

Sometimes time is tight and we have to work more quickly that normal. April and Jake were left with just 10 minutes of portrait time before the wedding breakfast was due to start.

We took advantage of the time it takes to seat the guests in order to get outside before the sun set and we lost the light. Thankfully April and Jake had taken advantage of my pre-wedding session in which I was able to teach them a few simple wedding portrait techniques.

The Old Kent Barn Photography really benefits from the beautiful attached gardens. I was able to work quickly with the couple to achieve a number of lovely portraits and still finish everything on time.

Later in the evening between rain showers we were able to get outside for a few night portraits which I always enjoy the opportunity to do.

Wedding Speeches

It is very true that great people make for entertain speeches. I love the opportunity of Old Kent Barn Photography when thought, love, and attention has been put into the speeches.

The Father of the Bride sets the tome for the speeches, by keeping it light, short and entertaining it was perfectly setup for Jake to deliver a humorous and lovely story about how out of his league he always considered April to be when they first met.

The best man was Jakes younger brother. He delivered a great speeches complimented by a slideshow detailing the awkward and embarrassing moments of the years they spent growing up together.

First Dance & Cake Cutting

The layout for Old Kent Barn Photography in the evening divides the barn in two. During the wedding breakfast the DJ and band can get setup with disturbing the evening behind closed curtains.

Once the evening celebrations are ready to get going the drapes are pulled back to reveal a large and romantic dance floor.

April and Jake cut their cake and then went straight into their first dance.

Disco

It is nice to get the opportunity to stay later in the evening. The disco is the time when people let their hair down and really enjoy a good dance. How often do daughters and their Dads get to dance together these days?
